Biography:


Dr. Véronique Lacombe earned her DVM degree from the National Veterinary School of Maisons-Alfort near Paris, France. She then stayed to complete an equine internship.  Next she completed a residency in large animal internal medicine at the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine where she also earned her PhD and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Ohio State’s College of Pharmacy. Prior to joining OSU Center for Veterinary Health Sciences, Dr. Lacombe was a Research Assistant Professor at the Ohio State’s College of Pharmacy. Dr. Lacombe is  a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Large Animal) and a Diplomate of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine. Dr. Lacombe's research program has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and by the American Heart Association, as well as several veterinary foundations. She has over 75 refereed publications including journal articles, abstracts and conference proceedings in the fields of comparative medicine and physiology, primarily focusing on glucose metabolism in striated muscle.

Current Research Focus:


Diabetes has reached epidemic levels and imposes a considerable medical and economic burden on societies that requires urgent action. The main pathogenic process underlying sustained hyperglycemia, the landmark of diabetes, results from a defect of insulin production or action, with dysfunctional glucose uptake into insulin-sensitive tissues (i.e., cardiac and skeletal muscles, and adipose tissues). Despite intensive research for over 50 years, the mechanisms of altered glucose transport observed during diabetes are not well known. Therefore, the main current mission of my laboratory is to investigate the regulation of glucose transport in insulin-sensitive tissue. We used both small and large animal models of metabolic diseases, including transgenic mice and horses. Findings from our ongoing studies could unravel new pathogenic mechanisms which could translate in the discovery of novel therapeutic directions for diabetic patients.
